IT WAS TOSSING PANCAKES IN STYLE.
Despite the real threat of snow the revived Grand Pancake Race met with tremendous success in Priory Gardens on Saturday last. Thirteen teams of four turned out supported by several hundred spectators.
It was a truly family occasion with resounding cheers encouraging and praising all the competitors, as they ran the shuttle relays whilst tossing the pancakes. Mind you some misjudged and the poor old pancakes were not fit to eat by the end of the race!
Very many organisations and commercial enterprises were invited and the Palazzo restaurant proved to be the winners of the final, followed home by the Meridian School and the Rotary Club of Royston.
All the participants were encouraged to attract supporting sponsorship. For the event was one of a big cHALLenge programme of occasions to raise money for a function hall, to be attached to St John the Baptist Parish Church in Baldock Street. It will be a welcome addition to the town’s provision because there’s a long felt need for another community hall.
‘It was great. Can we have it again next year?’ were popular expressions of the runners and spectators. We have little doubt we shall attract more teams come February 5th 2011’, said Ken & Di Charles, the Event Organisers.
The Flower Festival will be held in July 2011
La Notte Musica at PALAZZO
On the 22nd April cHALLenge held an evening of dinner and music at Palazzo, Royston. Once again we were treated to a lovely three-course Italian meal and whereas last time we were accompanied by a magician, this time it was by the wonderful music of Anthony Pigg. Anthony plays the classical guitar beautifully and the music was wonderful and not at all overpowering. It was a suitable accompaniment to good food, wine and the company of friends.
My table was made up of members of my housegroup and was a great way to socialise together and take a break from ‘studying’. I can thoroughly recommend booking your tickets early next time one of these evenings is advertised - it was a super evening.
Many thanks to Julia and the cHALLenge team for making it happen.
